Controller Profile (Hardware)

Beginners
Just for a catch up to anyone that doesn't know.
  • You'll need to directly plug your Elite 2 into your PC (you can Bluetooth it later after setup).
  • Second, you'll need the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store.

Once those are up and running. Inside the Xbox Accessories app give your new profile a name and assign it to one of the three slots - and of course, change the LED to Red. 😎
Hardware
Alright, this stuff should be fairly well-known if you have and Elite 2, if not there's a million YouTube videos just do a simple search (or ask in the comments and I'll help out).
  • First, set your toggle locks on the back of the controller to middle on both left & right triggers.
  • Second, pull out your handy little stick tension tool and set both left and right sticks to medium.

Shift (Modifier)

  • P4 (lower-right paddle) = Use as Shift button (hold, not toggle).

Paddles - Primary layer (no Shift held)

  • P1 (UL)L3 (crouch/stealth, calm horse)
  • P2 (UR)R3 (Dead Eye / Eagle Eye)
  • P3 (LL)A (sprint / gallop)
  • P4 (LR)Shift (no primary action)

Paddles - Shift layer (hold P4)

  • P1 D-Pad Up (whistle/call horse)
  • P2 D-Pad Right (satchel / quick use)
  • P3D-Pad Left (log/journal/player)
  • (Optional) map D-Pad Down (radar/HUD) to any Shift paddle if you use it often.

Sticks

Calculation: Radial on both sticks.

Right stick (camera/aim)
  • Primary curve: Instant, Curve adjustment: +1 tick right of center
  • Shift curve: Smooth, Curve adjustment: center (or -1 tick for ultra-fine aim)

Left stick (movement/horse)
  • Curve: Default (or Delayed if you want a softer roll-in on horseback; if Delayed, set Curve adj. +1 > This is my personal pref.)

Triggers

Locks: Middle (both - as mentioned at the beginning)

  • Mirror triggers: Off
  • LT (Aim/Lock-on): Start 2-3%, End 58% (±2 based on pref)
  • RT (Fire): Start 2-3% (or 4-6 if you rest your finger), End 63% (±2 based on pref) -or- for Finer-Aim: RT End ≈ 5% lower (e.g., 63%58%)

Why this is S-tier

  • Zero thumb gymnastics: sprint, crouch/calm, and Dead/Eagle Eye on paddles.
  • Precision on demand: hold P4 for smoother aim curve + D-Pad utilities without leaving the sticks.
  • Horseback mastery: gentler left-stick start, whistle on Shift, and instant Eagle/Eye while steering.
  • Rockstar timing preserved: no in-game remaps; all default hold/tap behaviors remain perfect.

If anything feels a hair too light/heavy after real missions, nudge RT Start (accidental shots) or Right-stick curve adj. one tick - otherwise you’re dialed. Ride out and enjoy it. 🐎🎯

In-Game

I use the Standard controls for this. I set auto-lock to wide, but I believe that's all I've adjusted.

Notes

I love to optimize and make it smooth, and this just works for me. I'd love to see what all works for all you other outlaws so let me know if you have something that is working for you.

And if I missed something my apologies - I'll try and add it in when/if I remember. Maybe I'll take some screenshots and add them if anyone has any issues or needs a better walkthrough.

Wrap-up
I know a lot of you outlaws play online (it's not my cup, but I recognize it). If you do, this, with some minor tweaks to the shift setups, could still be viable - but I'll look at that later as I haven't played online in a very long time. But overall it should make your dead eye and horseback smooth as butter.

Cheers! 🍻
