At some point before 1899, Mary-Beth Gaskill found herself in trouble after stealing watches and wallets from several men. Pursued by her angry victims, she crossed paths with the Van der Linde gang, who presumably intervened and rescued her from the chase. Grateful for their help and drawn to their way of life, Mary-Beth soon became a member of the gang.
