Sean MacGuire was born in County Donegal, Ireland, where he spent his early childhood. His family lived near a man named O’Driscoll, whose presence they despised—a rivalry that foreshadowed the bloody feud between the MacGuires and the O’Driscolls in years to come. Sean’s father, Darragh MacGuire, was an infamous Fenian outlaw who fled with his son to America. However, Darragh’s past eventually caught up with him, and he was hunted down and killed by officials. Orphaned at a young age, Sean was sent to a reform school, though the experience did little to tame his rebellious spirit.

Sean’s first encounter with Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews came in a bar somewhere in North Elizabeth. Spotting Dutch’s fancy pocket watch, he followed the pair into a dark alley and attempted to rob them at gunpoint. Much to Sean’s shock, Dutch and Hosea laughed at his bravado and dared him to pull the trigger—only for Sean to discover that they had already removed the bullets from his gun. Rather than punish him, Dutch and Hosea admired his boldness, shared food with him, and invited him into the Van der Linde gang. From that day forward, Sean became one of their own.
