Using Dynamic Resolution Scaling with DLSS

How it works out the gate

So DLSS and DRS do work together by default, but in a bit of a counterintuitive way. Alex of Digital Foundry explains it best in this video made when DLSS was first added:

To put it short, the dynamic resolution scaling only changes in a very thin percentage of the internal resolution (so DLSS Quality at 4K will only dip down to 75% of that internal 1440p resolution). Quality mode can only go down to 75% of that internal resolution, Balanced can only go down to 88%, and Performance and Ultra Performance don't work at all.

This guide will show how to circumvent this to allow DLSS to be fully dynamic, scaling based on your native output resolution and bottoming out to 50% of that.

The Fix

  • Open the Nvidia App and go to the Graphics tab
  • Ensure Doom Eternal is properly added and is visible in the programs list
  • IF you are using the game's official mod support, you have to manually add the DOOMSandBox64vk.exe using the Add A Program option under the three dots
  • Set the DLSS Override - Super Resolution Mode level to a Custom value of 99%. NOT 100%, because it doesn't work for some reason as far as my testing went
  • Make sure the app applies the setting, then launch Doom Eternal
  • In the Video settings tab in-game, ensure DLSS is set to any quality level (they all act the same with the resolution override), and set Resolution Scaling Mode to Dynamic, with the Target FPS slider matching your desired framerate target

You may now bask in the glory of dynamic resolution keeping performance and image quality to the best they can be thanks to DLSS!
