The Perfect Balance: Realism & Action
Underrated Masterpiece - RDR2
Before we dive into this guide, let me explain why I call it an "underrated masterpiece." Many players drop this game in the first few hours, frustrated by its slow pace or lack of over-the-top action, completely missing out on what makes RDR2 so special. Years later, they finally give it another chance, only to regret not playing it sooner. In this guide, we’re going to discuss how the delicate balance between realism and action is actually the secret behind its greatness.
In the gaming industry, the word "EXTREME" has always been a developer's worst nightmare. Forcing players to experience a single emotion or mechanic at full intensity usually leads to burnout, causing them to abandon the game early.
Whether you are an indie developer or a AAA studio, the golden rule remains the same: balance is everything. You must carefully weigh every element to keep the player engaged at every single moment of the journey. Games that manage to sustain this perfect harmony throughout their entire experience are the ones we undeniably call masterpieces.
RDR2 is undoubtedly one of the most realistic games you will ever witness. From NPC behaviors and environmental factors to wildlife and weapon handling, the level of detail is staggering. Players who aren't used to this depth in the gaming industry are often quick to label RDR2 as "too realistic."
However, when you look at its core, that "too" or "extreme" label is an exaggeration. In reality, RDR2 is a masterclass in balancing realism with gripping action. It isn't that the game crosses the line into being too realistic; it's simply that players aren't accustomed to this level of quality, causing them to mistake groundbreaking detail for an extreme simulation.
In an industry heavily saturated with games that run away from reality—blinding players with flying ships, brainless zombies, and characters hopping between dimensions—should this hardcore realism become the new standard? Or should gaming remain a medium detached from reality, purely pushing the boundaries of human imagination?
This is exactly where we have lost the balance. To take the easy way out, many modern studios are drifting toward games that neither challenge the imagination nor offer any sense of realism, leaving massive voids in the industry. Instead of settling for these shallow formulas, the industry needs to strike a balance: creating games that are grounded in realism, yet daring enough to push the limits of our imagination.
