Blacksmithing Tool Progression

Primitive Furnace: Requires Clay (found near water or in forests), Stones, and Concrete. Used to extract Iron Blooms from ore or smelt metal scrap into Iron Chunks.
Primitive Forge: Requires a Stone Anvil (made via Masonry) and Concrete.
At this stage, you can forge simple items like nails, fireplace pokers, and garden hoes.
Charcoal Production: You must build a Wood Charcoal Pit to turn logs and branches into fuel for your furnaces.

Anvil Casting: To move beyond the Stone Anvil, you must cast a Blacksmith Anvil.
This requires an Anvil Mold (Carpentry 2), a Kiln (to fire the clay mold), and at least two Large Ceramic Crucibles.
Bellows: Crafting Large Bellows involves an entire sub-loop of Butchering animals, tanning leather, and drying it on racks.
Advanced Furnace & Forge: These allow for the creation of Steel Bars and Steel Ingots.
Steel is necessary for top-tier weapons and tools.

Farming Skills

Agriculture

Occupations and Traits with a bonus to Agriculture:

Farmer: +4

Gardener Trait: +1

Focus on harvesting healthy plants to maximize your XP output.
You only earn experience upon harvesting a crop you planted yourself.
Routine actions like plowing, sowing, watering, or weeding do not award any XP.

Harvest XP Calculation

The XP earned from a harvest is based on the plant's health and quality at the moment of collection.

Formula: (Crop Health at Harvest / 2).

Quality Bonus/Penalty:

Good condition: +25 XP.
Badly cared-for: -15 XP.
Cap: The maximum XP you can gain from a single crop tile is 100 XP.

Harvest and Planting Times

Best Months to Plant: April, May, and June are generally optimal for most crops.
Winter: Crops do not grow well or at all in winter, and they can die instantly if planted out of season.
Year-Round: Some items like lettuce and spinach can be grown more flexibly, while root vegetables prefer warmer seasons.
XP is only gained on harvest. Crops take time to mature (reach Phase 6), which determines how quickly you can earn XP.
Harvesting at the "Seed-bearing" (blooming) stage takes longer but ensures you get seeds back for replanting.

You can check the exact hours until the next phase by right-clicking on a sown furrow and looking at the tooltip.

Common crops and their base growth times in days.

Radish: 30 days
Cabbage: 60 days
Broccoli: 60 days
Bell Pepper: 60 days
Cauliflower: 60 days
Potato: 90 days
Tomato: 90 days
Carrot: 90 days
Corn: 90 days
Onion: 90 days
Winter Wheat: 108 days
Barley: 108 days
Leek: 150 days
Rosemary: 180 days
Garlic: 240 days
Hops: 240 days

Factors Affecting Growth

Seasons: Each crop has a Best Month for planting (e.g., September for Barley) that may offer yield bonuses, and Bad Months where growth may be stunted or the crop may die immediately.
Water: Plants require specific water levels. Under-watering results in slow growth or disease, while severe lack of water kills them.
Fertilizer/Compost: Using fertilizer on young plants can reduce growth time by roughly 20-30+ hours, but over-fertilizing will kill them.
Skill Level: A higher Farming skill allows you to see more information about the plants' needs.
Spacing: Do not plant crops directly next to each other. Leaving space helps prevent the spread of diseases like Mildew, Pest Flies, or Aphids.

Agriculture Skill Milestones
  • Level 0–1: Can see the name of the crop and its current growth stage.
  • Level 2: Can see the plant's health (Healthy, Flourishing, or Sick) and its hydration level.

Feeding/Watering: Directly providing food and water to animals (not just via troughs) can provide experience, especially when using the "Give Water" or "Feed" options in the context menu.
Milking Cows: Milking female cattle produces dairy and grants Animal Care XP.
Petting Animals: Right-click an animal and select "Pet." This works on all livestock and can be done once per day per animal.
Picking up Small Animals: Picking up rabbits or rats increases animal acceptance and XP.
Shearing Sheep: Shearing sheep for raw wool.
Quantity Matters: More animals mean more opportunities for daily petting, making it one of the faster skills to level.

Butchering animals for meat is separate and belongs to the Butchering Skill, not Animal Care.

VHS
A Day on the Farm: (Animal Care +75 XP)
The Petting Zoo: (Animal Care +75 XP)

Key Leveling Benefits

As your Animal Care level increases, you gain better insight into your livestock's health and improved productivity.

Information Access: Higher levels allow you to view detailed stats like pregnancy stages and precise stress levels.
Resource Yield: Increases the amount of milk, wool, and eggs harvested from animals.
Safety: Reduces the chance of stressed animals "breaking" (becoming hostile or unmanageable) during milking or shearing.

Animal Care XP & Leveling Milestones
  • Level 1-2: Basic interactions; daily petting provides significant early XP.
  • Level 3-4: Milking and shearing become faster, can harvest more resources (milk, wool).
  • Level 5-6: Animals are less likely to become stressed by your presence.
  • Level 8+: Allows milking even highly stressed animals.
  • Level 10: Maximum efficiency in animal management and resource harvesting.

Butchering

Occupations with a bonus to Butchering:

Rancher: +3
Chef: +2
Fishing Guide: +1

Traits with a bonus to Butchering:

Hunter: +1
Keen Cook: +1

The Butchering Skill is primarily levelled by processing animal carcasses and filleting fish. The experience gained is generally proportional to the amount of meat harvested.

Butchering XP Gains

Butcher Hook: Using a butcher hook provides more meat and unprocessed animal leather, and is generally faster for leveling.
Animal Parts: Collecting bones from carcasses provides a "giant chunk" of extra experience.
Alternative XP: You may also gain Cooking or Carving experience when processing meat and bones, depending on the specific update.
Step-by-Step Processing: For larger animals, you gain XP for each sub-action: removing blood, removing the head, skinning for leather, and finally harvesting the meat. Butchering the head further to obtain brains also provides additional XP.

Base XP Gains per Action

Activity - Base XP Gain - Requirements/Tools

Butcher Small Animal - (10 XP) - Sharp knife or meat cleaver; Crafting surface
Slice Fish Fillet - (10 XP) - Sharp knife or meat cleaver
Collect Bones - ("Giant chunk") - Often cited as a significant source of immediate XP
Complete Butchering - (~20–30 XP (Variable) - Rabbit, Sharp Knife
Large Animal Processing - (Proportional) - Requires a Butcher's Hook for optimal meat and XP.
Generally yields higher XP based on the high meat output (a single deer can produce 24-48 units of venison).

Butchering Milestones
  • Level 0–1: High chance of wasting meat; harvested items may appear as "scrappy bits" or low-quality cuts.
  • Level 3: Ability to build a Butcher Hook (requires Carpentry 3) to process large livestock.
  • Level 7+: Significant increase in yield for rare resources like animal brains (used for Tannin in leatherworking) and high-quality prime cuts.

Survival Skills

First Aid

Occupations with a bonus to First Aid:

Doctor: +6
Nurse: +3
Park Ranger: +1

Traits with a bonus to First Aid:

First Aider : +1
Former Scout: +1

First Aid experience is gained by performing medical actions on yourself or on other players.

XP Gains by Medical Action

Burns and fractures grant significant XP when treated.

Treating another player gives double the experience compared to self-treatment.

Broken Glass Method: Take off shoes and socks, walk on broken glass to get shards in feet, then use tweezers to remove them repeatedly. This is the fastest way to level First Aid.
Dirty Bandage Swap: Apply a dirty bandage to a wound, then replace it with a clean one repeatedly.

VHS
Combat Wound Management: (First Aid +87.5 XP)
RMFA (Rosewood Medical): (First Aid +75 XP)
Emergency First Aid: (First Aid +75 XP)

First Aid does not increase healing speed for common wounds (scratches/lacerations), only for broken bones.

Essential Healing

Comfrey Poultice - Reduces recovery time of a fracture by 50%.
Plantain Poultice - Will increase the healing rate of a wound by 40%.
Wild Garlic Poultice - Used to recover from a wound infection.

Black Sage - Reduces pain by 7 when consumed. Natural alternative to Painkillers.
Common Mallow - Reduces a Cold by 5 when consumed. The only item that directly reduces the level of a cold.
Ginseng - Reduces exhaustion by 2 when consumed. The only item that directly reduces exhaustion.
Lemongrass - Reduces sickness by 12 when consumed. It can stop death if the player has drunk tainted water, eaten rotten or untreated food or gained a corpse sickness.

First Aid Milestones
As your level increases, you gain the following benefits:
  • Faster Medical Actions: The time taken to bandage, stitch, or disinfect wounds decreases.
  • Bandage Longevity: At higher levels (up to Level 10), bandages and poultices stay clean roughly twice as long.
  • Fracture Recovery: At Level 0 fractures heal at 50% speed; this increases by 50% per level (reaching 550% healing speed at Level 10).
  • Reduced Penalties: Higher levels reduce the movement and swing speed penalties caused by limb injuries.

Fishing

Occupations and Traits with a bonus to Fishing:

Fisherman: +3
Angler Trait: +1

Fishing experience is gained primarily by catching fish, with larger fish providing more experience than smaller ones. XP is also awarded for failed attempts and for checking fishing nets.

Fishing XP Gains

Action / Catch Type - (Base XP) - Information

Big Fish - (7 XP) - Based on weight; provides the most XP per single action.
Medium Fish - (5 XP) - Standard mid-range catch.
Small Fish - (3 XP) - Lower reward but more common at early levels.
Trash / Failed Attempt - (1 XP) - Awarded for catching items like socks or failing a bite roll.
Checking Fishing Net - (0.25 XP) - Gain for simply checking a trap.
Successful Net Catch - (0.5 XP) - Total gain when a net contains a small bait fish.

The amount of XP gained is affected by Skill level and Traits.
The base XP for a successful catch is determined by the fish's size category.

XP Multipliers and Boosts

Day/Night: Fishing at dawn (4 am – 7 am) or dusk (6 pm – 9 pm) increases the chance to catch fish by roughly 10%.
Deep Water: Standing on a pier at least 7 tiles in or being at least 7 tiles from shore, reduces bite time by half and increases the likelihood of catching larger, higher-XP fish.

Fastest Ways to Gain Fishing XP

Spear Fishing: Crafted Spears are the fastest method for generating attempts (5–10 in-game minutes).
Live Bait on Rod: Using worms, cockroaches, or small bait fish on a rod provides consistent, high-rate catches (8–11 in-game minutes).

Foraging XP Gain Actions

Finding an Item: You gain XP immediately when a spotted item appears (the icon appears above your head).
Interacting with Items: You gain additional XP by picking up or choosing to discard an item.
Discarding vs. Picking Up: Both options reward the same amount of experience.
Area Depletion: Even when a zone is depleted to 0%, you can still gain experience, though it is more efficient to find areas with higher density.

XP values for every individual item aren't fixed and rarer items generally grant more XP.

Tips for Faster XP

High-Density Areas: Deep forests provide the best opportunities for finding multiple items quickly.
Check Locations: Specific locations (like trash piles for trash/metal or roads for stones) help with finding items more often.
Materials vs. Food: "Materials" like stones, twigs, and tree branches can be found at Level 0 and provide a baseline for early leveling. Edible food (berries, mushrooms) typically yields more XP than these materials.

Foraging is one of the faster skills to level, and you can significantly raise your level within a single in-game week by consistently foraging and utilizing the appropriate skill books.

TV/VHS

Exposure Survival
Episode 5: (Foraging +12.5 XP)
Episode 7: (Foraging +87.5 XP)

Foraging Milestones
  • Level 1-3: You will mostly find basic items such as twigs, stones, and common berries.
  • Level 4: You can begin finding more useful items, including medicinal herbs (with the Herbalist trait) and better resources, making it easier to sustain hunger.
  • Level 5+: A significant increase in item rarity occurs. You can start consistently finding items like valuable medicines, better food sources (frogs, birds), and more diverse materials to survive.
  • Level 8-10: You can find high-calorie items like grapefruits, nuts, and diverse seeds. Foraging becomes efficient enough for full-time survival, even during winter months (though items are much rarer).

Tracking

Traits with a bonus to Tracking:

Hunter Trait: +1

The Tracking Skill is used to find and follow wild animals like deer and rabbits. Experience is primarily gained through environmental interaction in Search Mode and proximity to live animals.

At Level 0, you often cannot interact with tracks directly. Find an area with small game (like rabbits), enable Search Mode, and toggle the setting to Tracking. Walk near any yellow tracks that appear to gain passive experience until you reach Level 1, where more active interaction options unlock.

Tracking XP Gains and Actions

Inspecting Tracks (Footprints/Poo/Broken Sticks): Gained by entering search mode, selecting "Animal Tracks," and right-clicking yellow-highlighted tracks.
Sneaking near Deer/Rabbits: Passive XP is gained when in crouch/sneak mode in close proximity to spotted wildlife.
Locating "Nature's Gift": Finding and examining the animal's feeding/resting spot provides XP and directional info.
Grinding Method: Setting up a "fence trap" (a 3x3 box with an opening) to keep an animal nearby allows for rapid XP gain by repeatedly sneaking near it.

Tips for Maximizing Tracking XP

Animal Behavior: Higher tracking skill levels allow for identifying the direction of animals, increasing the likelihood of successful tracking.
Locate Animal Trails: Look for yellow track highlights specifically in forest and field edges, as well as near treelines in farmland.
Observe Before Inspection: If you cannot immediately click a track, it is likely you need to be in search mode or be closer to it.
Use Mods: To see the exact numbers, use the Show Skill Xp Gain mod, which shows trackers for all skill gains.

Tips for Efficient Tracking

Ideal Locations: Animal tracks are most abundant in Grasslands and Farmland; they are significantly rarer in dense forests.
Zigzag Search: Use a zigzag or "S" pattern while in Search Mode to cover more ground and trigger the yellow track highlights.
Environment Boosts: Crouching while in Search Mode increases your search radius, making it easier to spot tracks from further away.

Tracking Milestones
  • Levels 1-2: Ability to identify simple animal droppings and footprints, often limited to rabbits.
  • Levels 3-4: Improved spotting distance and ability to identify more complex tracks, such as deer tracks, allowing you to follow trails with more accuracy.
  • Levels 5-6: Increased success in following tracks through dense forest. You can more effectively determine the freshness of tracks and direction of animal movement.
  • Levels 7-8: You can pick up trails from a greater distance and see more detailed information about the animal's behavior.
  • Levels 9-10: Maximum tracking radius and accuracy, making it easier to pinpoint animal locations and habits for hunting.

Trapping

Occupations and Traits with a bonus to Trapping:

Park Ranger +1

Trapping XP is gained by successfully retrieving an animal from a trap.
The amount of XP received is based on the hunger reduction value of the animal caught.

Key XP & Leveling Information

The "Bird Grind": For beginners, Stick Traps baited with worms (easily dug from the ground) are considered the most reliable way to power-level because they work at any hour and in almost any zone.
Mouse Trap Method: Using mouse traps with cheese or peanut butter in built-up areas is effective for early, cheap XP.
Distance Requirement: Traps must be at least 75 tiles away from you to work properly and catch animals.
Best Time: Rabbits and Squirrels are primarily caught between 6 PM and 6 AM.

Average XP per Animal Catch

Animal - (Average XP Gained) - Best Trap Type - Recommended Bait

Rabbit - (21.66) - Trap Box, Cage Trap - Carrots, Cabbage
Squirrel - (11.66) - Trap Box, Trap Crate - Peanuts, Cereal
Bird - (5.66) - Stick Trap - Worms, Cereal, Bread
Rat - (5.00) - Mousetrap - Cheese, Peanut Butter
Mouse - (~5.00) - Mousetrap - Cheese, Peanut Butter

TV/VHS
Exposure Survival Episode 6: (Trapping +125 XP)

Trapping Skill Milestones

As you level up, you automatically unlock the ability to craft new traps. If you find The Hunter Magazine volumes, you can often build these traps even before reaching the required level.

Skill Level - Unlockable Item - Description & Target Animals

Level 0 - Stick Trap - Small trap used to catch birds (bait with worms/crickets).
Level 1 - Snare Trap - Medium trap for catching squirrels and rabbits.
Level 2 - Box Trap - More durable trap for squirrels and rabbits (requires Carpentry 1).
Level 3 - Cage Trap - High-tier trap for squirrels and rabbits.
Level 4 - Trap Crate - Large, effective trap for rabbits.

Physical Skills

Fitness
Fitness experience is gained by performing fitness exercises, hitting zeds with melee attacks while not overexerted, and at random intervals while Running or Sprinting, with an equal chance of receiving either fitness or running experience whenever experience is gained this way.

The following Occupations determine initial skill levels.

Firefighter (+1)
Fitness Instructor (+3)
Nurse (+1)
Rancher (+1)

Lightfooted
Lightfooted determines the loudness of footsteps across all types of movement.
It stacks with the loudness reduction from Nimble. Unlike Nimble, Lightfooted also gives a bonus to Sneaking, increasing the likelihood of zeds ignoring footsteps entirely.

The following Occupations determine initial skill levels.

Burglar (+2)
Nurse (+1)
Security Guard (+1)

Nimble
Nimble affects the movement speed while in "combat stance," allowing one to safely retreat while fighting. It also reduces footsteps' loudness, stacking with Lightfooted.

The footstep loudness reduction of Nimble affects all movement types, not just while in combat stance. Much like the Lightfooted skill, the footstep noise reduction of the Nimble skill is particularly noticeable when sprinting behind zeds.

The following Occupations determine initial skill levels.

Burglar (+2)
Police Officer (+1)

Running (Sprinting)
The Running Skill affects how fast a character runs and sprints, including running while Sneaking.
The speed increase is added to movement speed and may not stack intuitively with other effects.

Running Experience is gained in random intervals while Running and Sprinting. If the player is too overexerted or overencumbered they may simply "power-walk" instead, but they can still gain sprinting experience while doing so.
Zeds do not need to be nearby for the player to gain running experience.

The following Occupations determine initial skill levels.

Firefighter (+1)
Fitness Instructor (+2)
Security Guard (+2)

Sneaking
Sneaking Experience is gained by crouching (pressing C) near zombies while undetected. Experience can be gained even when in the combat stance, provided the player was crouching beforehand.

Walking/running while Sneaking has a default 20% sound radius multiplier and a 40% detection chance multiplier.

The following determine initial skill levels.

Burglar (+2)
Hunter Trait (+1)

Strength
Strength experience is gained by performing strength exercises, carrying more than 50% of the player's weight capacity, and Running. Strength experience is also granted when hitting zeds with melee attacks, and cutting trees.

The following Occupations determine initial skill levels.

Firefighter (+1)
Fitness Instructor (+1)
Lumberjack (+1)
Farmer (+1)
