In-Depth Counselor Rundown *3/9/2019 Updated*
A Quick Note
All the information I've put into this guide, comes from over 1,000 hours of gameplay, but there's always more to learn. If you have anything of importance to add, go ahead and mention it in the comments, and I'll take a look at it.
Counselor "Difficulty"
- Ability to achieve the goal of the character
- Survivability
- Knowledge/experience required to play the character effectively
Difficulties include:
- Effortless
- Easy
- Intermediate
- Hard
- Challenging
Stats
In this section, I will give brief descriptions of the seven stats that counselors have that make them unique and help them to survive against the killer of Crystal Lake. This is mostly meant for newer players who don't really gain anything from the short phrases provided to each stat in the counselor customization screen.
ComposureThis stat affects the "fear pool" a counselor has. Those with low Composure succumb to fear easier than those with higher a Composure stat. Certain occurences can raise or lower one's fear these events include:
Raise Fear:
- Being in Jason's presence
- Standing in the dark
- Being in isolation
- Suffering from injuries
- Being near dead counselors
- Moving through the woods
- Witnessing Jason destroy objects
- Finding Pamela's severed head in Jason's shack
- Staying in a non-barricaded cabin
- Being unarmed
Lower Fear:
- Being away from Jason
- Being in lit areas
- Standing in a barricaded cabin
- Standing near campfires or fireplaces
- Sticking with other counselors
- Holding a weapon
- Hiding in a hiding spot
- Keeping your flashlight on
Composure can be seen as a bucket, the bigger the bucket (higher Composure stat), the more fear it can hold. This can act as a double-edged sword, as this means the bucket takes longer to fully empty it's "fear contents". Keep this in mind when playing counselors with higher Composure.
LuckLuck is a stat that affects many aspects of a counselor's attributes. Weapon durability is mostly affected by Luck, with a Luck of 6 or more resulting in more weapon swings, while a Luck of 4 or less will decrease the amount of hits a weapon has. There are some other aspects that are changed by a counselor's Luck, such as:
- Amount of stamina gained from stunning Jason
- Amount of stamina gained from breaking free from Jason's grasp
- Car and boat start times
Repair
The Repair stat affects the difficulty of the repair minigame that appears when attempting to fix an objective or electrical box. A higher Repair stat grants easier minigames with less skill checks, while a lower Repair grants harder minigames with more skill checks.
Speed
This stat is pretty straightfoward. The higher the Speed stat, the faster a counselor is. The lower the stat, the slower the counselor is. This purely affects movement speed, not action speed.
This stat deals with a counselor's Stamina pool. Higher Stamina increases the pool while increasing the regeneration speed of said Stamina pool. Lower Stamina produces the opposite effect of smaller Stamina pools and slower regen speeds. Stamina is used up by the following actions:
- Jogging
- Running
- Combat Dodging
- Sprinting
- Greater noise generation
- Heavy decrease in movement speed
- Inability to perform combat dodges
Stealth affects the ability to conceal noise pings from Jason. Noise pings appear on Jason's screen whenever a counselor makes noise (running, firecrackers exploding, swimming, bursting through doors, etc.) Certain Stealth levels can conceal movement-related noise pings from Jason. These levels are:
Stealth of 10:
- Can crouch walk, walk, and jog without creating noise pings
- Can crouch walk and walk without creating noise pings
- Must crouch walk to conceal noise pings
Strength
This stat mainly deals with how much weapons damage Jason. The higher the stat, the more damage one can deal against Jason. Sharp weapons like the Machete, Fire Poker, and the Axe, deal the most damage. These kinds of weapons are used to take Jason's iconic hockey mask off. This is a crucial requirement in order to kill Jason. Strength also affects the stamina cost of combat dodging.
Roles/Classes
This section is meant to elaborate on the terms I use to divide counselors into groups based on their skillsets.
RunnersRunners are fast counselors who can move objects across long distances, or answer a counselor's call for help from afar. These individuals should be seen running with vehicle parts or a fuse toward the objectives.
Defenders use their Luck to assist others in completing their missions by providing some protection. Defenders should always have a weapon in hand to protect their fellow counselors, or to distract Jason with a few well placed swings to the face.
Technicians can mostly be found near objectives repairing modes of escape. They boast a high Repair stat, and use it to make sure as many people escape in the shortest amount of time possible.
Fighters use their muscle to harass Jason out of his hockey mask. These counselors are an essential piece of the puzzle when it comes to killing Jason. They will most likely be wielding sharp weapons to remove the mask with speed and efficiency.
Vanessa Jones
Unlock Level: Level 0
Stats:
- Composure: 3/10
- Luck: 6/10
- Repair: 2/10
- Speed: 10/10
- Stamina: 9/10
- Stealth: 1/10
- Strength: 4/10
- Deliver car parts, boat parts, and/or the phone fuse to their respective locations
- Protect high-value targets from Jason
Although Vanessa boasts a high Speed/Stamina combo, don't abuse her stamina. Fully depleting your stamina pool can leave you in a very tough spot. Whether it be inches away from the police, or in Jason's presence, you want to make sure you are in condition to at least jog without being exhausted.
With Vanessa being able to move most efficiently among the other counselors, she has an abysmal Stealth stat. This means Vanessa can only be stealthy while crouching or standing still. The best way to counter this, is to embrace how loud she is. Vanessa can serve as a great distraction for her fellow counselors while they take care of repairing objectives. Vanessa is best played with a "loud and proud" playstyle, focusing heavily on one objective, such as delivering parts, protecting others, or just distracting Jason by any means necessary.
Beginner's Notes:
For those starting out, your chosen counselor will be Vanessa. Should you choose to continue with playing her, remember that if you jog, you'll be able to move quickly for a long time. Running should be saved for critical moments, and you should never walk, as there is literally no need to be slow when you have a Stealth of 1.
Deborah Kim
Unlock Level: Level 6
Stats:
- Composure: 5/10
- Luck: 3/10
- Repair: 10/10
- Speed: 4/10
- Stamina: 3/10
- Stealth: 9/10
- Strength: 1/10
- Repair objectives as quickly and efficiently as possible
Deborah is one of two smartest counselors at camp, so she should be focusing her time and attention towards the objectives and where their corresponding parts are. She isn't a track runner like Vanessa, so try your best to make deliveries as quick as possible. If a part is a fair distance away, try to get another counselor to bring the part to you, or at least meet you halfway.
Deborah's Luck isn't very high, so when it comes to combat, try to avoid using weapons. You can hold them, just try not to swing them too much. This allows counselors with a higher Luck stat, to help defend you while you fix modes of escape for longer periods of time. If you are alone, or if counselors are too far away from you, it's best to have a weapon on hand to defend yourself.
Tiffany Cox
Unlock Level: Level 18
Stats:
- Composure: 3/10
- Luck: 4/10
- Repair: 1/10
- Speed: 6/10
- Stamina: 9/10
- Stealth: 10/10
- Strength: 2/10
- Take repair components to their respective locations
Tiffany has good Speed/Stamina combo, allowing her to move objective parts while Vanessa is busy running circles around Jason or if she is running another part herself. Try to coordinate with other Runners to make sure parts arrive as fast as possible for your Technicians to reap the fruits of your labor.
A high Stealth stat doesn't mean a lot without perks to strengthen it. When starting out, try to use your high Stealth as an early game tool to make sure parts are moved without attention, unlike your noisy, faster counterpart.
Kenny Riedell
Unlock Level: Level 0
Stats:
- Composure: 5/10
- Luck: 5/10
- Repair: 5/10
- Speed: 5/10
- Stamina: 5/10
- Stealth: 5/10
- Strength: 5/10
- Fill in the roles that are not present amongst your team
- Help make jobs go faster by lending an extra set of hands
Kenny acts as a Jack of All Trades, having the unique privilege of being able to do anything with an average level of efficiency. Those who play an objective-based Kenny can assist Technicians, while a combat-oriented Kenny can help to keep Jason busy or even remove his mask. To those who wish to play without having a set responsibility, Kenny is a good fit for you.
Being able to do everything shouldn't be a reason to block others who are much better than you at the task at hand, from doing their job. Your skillset can act as hinderance to the team, if you try to carry the entire workload by yourself. If you're repairing something, and a Technician comes along, give the part to them, and act as a Defender instead.
Beginner's Notes:
As mentioned earlier, if you like to do a bit of everything, Kenny's your guy. This flexibility is great for getting to learn the middle ground of the four classes and their responsibilities. There will be an edge of difficulty, as there are others who can exceed your efficiency in any task, but where's the gain without the pain, right?
Jenny Myers
Unlock Level: Level 0
Stats:
- Composure: 10/10
- Luck: 8/10
- Repair: 2/10
- Speed: 3/10
- Stamina: 5/10
- Stealth: 6/10
- Strength: 1/10
- Keep counselors safe by providing protection
Jenny Myers makes for an excellent partner to have when you have to fend off Jason. Her high Composure allows her to escape Jason's grab quicker and keep her cool for longer than other counselors. A Luck stat of 8 allows her weapons to last longer too, which is just what you need when you're going up against a unrelenting killer.
What separates Jenny from the other defenders negatively, is her Speed/Stamina combo. Jenny has a combo stat of 8/20 which is the lowest of any Defender in the game. She can be extremely useful in a fight, as long she maintains her stamina and sticks close to whoever she's defending.
Beginner's Notes:
For those who wish to start out as Jenny, you need to be aware of how important her lack of Stamina and Speed is. These low stats make her one of the most unathletic girls at camp. She is a terrible Fighter, sporting a Strength of 1. With a Repair of 2, and your lack of experience with repairing objectives, being a Technician is out of the question. Her only shining quality is her Luck and Composure, which require experience to be used well. You can choose to play whomever you please, but Jenny is just not beginner friendly.
Chad Kensington
Unlock Level: Level 0
Stats:
- Composure: 1/10
- Luck: 10/10
- Repair: 2/10
- Speed: 9/10
- Stamina: 4/10
- Stealth: 6/10
- Strength: 3/10
- Protect other counselors from Jason
- Keep Jason distracted
Chad is well known as one of the strongest Defenders in the game, for having a Luck of 10. This allows his weapons to last for much longer, keeping him in the fight. He's also pretty fast which can help him serve as in impromptu Runner, for taking parts across short distances, due to his low Stamina.
When it comes to operating vehicles, Chad's luck allows him to start them much faster than other counselors. Having Chad in the driver's seat, can mean the difference between a smooth getaway, and a car ride gone horribly wrong.
With Chad sounding like the perfect counselor, his terrific Luck is balanced out by his terrible Composure, even the slightest hint of danger can freak him out. This can serve as a real problem when facing off against Jason, as your vision will become limited and you will constantly trip over your own feet. Not to mention that if Jason grabs you, your money won't be enough to get him to let go. Keep this in mind when choosing to play Chad.
Beginner's Notes:
Chad is a good beginning character for those who like to be a direct annoyance. Chad's Luck allows his weapons to be extremely durable, so if you wish to play the game by fighting Jason, Chad's a good place to start. He also has the added benefit of starting vehicles faster than any other counselor, which has its uses.
A.J. Mason
Unlock Level: Level 4
Stats:
- Composure: 7/10
- Luck: 1/10
- Repair: 7/10
- Speed: 4/10
- Stamina: 4/10
- Stealth: 10/10
- Strength: 2/10
Role/Classes: Technician Purpose/Objective:
- Repair objectives as fast as possible
A fan favorite, A.J. has high Composure, Repair, and Stealth stats. This allows her to be very efficient when working alone to repair objectives. She works best when staying close to objectives, receiving parts from Runners and taking care of business in a short time. A.J. has the best Composure/Stealth combo. This gives her the greatest chance to get away with hiding.
Hiding can only work for so long however, as Jason will eventually find you. Once he manages to sniff you out, you'll be in a pretty tough spot. A.J. lacks the Speed or Stamina to keep up a chase, and her Luck is absolutely atrocious, meaning she'll burn through weapons like paper. Make sure that a method of escape is completed before the downhill battle of the endgame begins.
Brandon "Buggzy" Wilson
Unlock Level: Level 8
Stats:
- Composure: 4/10
- Luck: 2/10
- Repair: 1/10
- Speed: 8/10
- Stamina: 8/10
- Stealth: 2/10
- Strength: 10/10
- Take Jason's mask off
- Deliver parts to their respective objective locations
Being the strongest counselor at the camp's disposal, Buggzy is an excellent Fighter, being able to demask Jason in only 2-3 hits with a machete. His high Stamina/Speed combo allows him to be a flexible Fighter when it comes to chasing Jason, as he has a very high combo of 16/20 for Stamina and Speed. It is enitrely possible, with the right stamina management, to chase Jason across far distances, just to tear that mask off his face.
When it comes to playing Buggzy, it can benefit to the team to play a two part playstyle. The first part consisting of trying to demask Jason. Pushing for this early and succeeding can put a Jason on edge, causing him to play more reserved, especially when Tommy Jarvis hits the scene. After your job is done, Buggzy becomes a Runner. Use that 16/20 combo I mentioned earlier to bring parts to your teammates to ensure that escape is possible just in case your Jason killing efforts are cut short, with all the females being dead, or Tommy meeting his end a bit too early than you anticipated.
Eric "J.R." Lachappa
Unlock Level: Level 10
Stats:
- Composure: 4/10
- Luck: 5/10
- Repair: 10/10
- Speed: 3/10
- Stamina: 2/10
- Stealth: 8/10
- Strength: 3/10
- Repair objectives as fast as possible
As Deborah's male counterpart, you have the same mission as her; repair objectives as quickly as possible, and make sure as many people can use them as you can. Although Deborah can barely beat Eric in a footrace, Lachappa has a higher Luck stat, which can allow him to act as, in emergenices, a Defender. This average Luck stat allows Lachappa to play a decent balance of Technician and Defender when Jason is around. If paired with Deborah, it would be best to have her repair the objective while you cover her, as you have the superior Luck and Strength.
With Eric being the nerd of the group, he doesn't get a lot of exercise. Vanessa and Tiffany can sprint circles around him, while he can only dream of coming close. Stamina management is of the upmost importance when playing him. After all, you can't make use of your head if Jason catches you and takes it from you.
When it comes to the two smartest counselors at Crystal Lake, if you wish to reach objectives just a bit faster, Deborah would be a better choice. Those who wish for the same intellect, but with a bit of punch for protection, Lachappa's the way to go.
Adam Palomino
Unlock Level: Level 14
Stats:
- Composure: 7/10
- Luck: 2/10
- Repair: 6/10
- Speed: 5/10
- Stamina: 4/10
- Stealth: 3/10
- Strength: 8/10
- Remove Jason's mask
- Fix objectives whenever possible
Although Adam is a Fighter first, his above average Repair can be a great asset to the team when your team's numbers are dropping. Unlike Buggzy, Adam has a Stamina/Speed combo of 9/20. This paints Adam as an opportunistic Fighter as opposed to a chasing Fighter. While moving around camp, keep repairing objectives as your main focus, but if Jason shows his face, make sure to drop or install whatever part you might be holding, to grab something sharp and make the most of your Strength.
Adam can help his fellow counselors if he sticks close to objectives when Jason's mask is still on. This provides a two part defense system that can utilize the Strength of Adam and Buggzy, with Adam sticking close to objectives, and Buggzy running around chasing Jason. Once that mask comes off, Adam can choose to play as a Technician, focusing on fixing any objectives that haven't been repaired, or he can assist others in holding Jason off. Adam can provide some help in a pinch, but don't expect it to be for long, as he shares a Luck of 2 with his friend Buggzy.
Mitch Floyd
Unlock Level: Level 24
Stats:
- Composure: 9/10
- Luck: 2/10
- Repair: 8/10
- Speed: 3/10
- Stamina: 4/10
- Stealth: 6/10
- Strength: 3/10
- Repair objectives as fast as possible
Mitch is our mellowed out Technician at camp Crystal Lake, who makes use of a high Composure and Repair. Mitch, like most Technicians, should keep close to the objectives to make sure they are repaired as soon as parts come in. It doesn't hurt to check a few cabins that are close to the car or boat, just don't go too far, as Mitch doesn't have the movement capability that other counselors possess.
Mitch's Repair is the second highest in the game, under Eric and Deborah. He's also able to keep his cool much better than other counselor's thanks to some "herbal reinforcement". These two stats are all he really has to offer though, meaning it's best to play Mitch with a Defender by his side. Jenny is an excellent partner because she shares Mitch's high Composure and low Speed/Stamina combo, while providing the Luck he needs to keep him up and running. These two can form a slow moving Runner duo, with Mitch holding the parts, while Jenny makes sure Jason doesn't get any funny ideas.
With that being said, like most Technicians, Mitch's chances of survival dwindles as the match progresses, so make sure to escape camp quickly before Jason smokes you out.
Fox
Unlock Level: Level 32
Stats:
- Composure: 6/10
- Luck: 3/10
- Repair: 6/10
- Speed: 4/10
- Stamina: 5/10
- Stealth: 4/10
- Strength: 7/10
- Provide assistance for those trying to kill Jason
- Repair objectives whenever possible
Fox being the strongest woman at camp, can prove very useful for those who wish to win by killing Jason. Fox can play as any role in a Jason killing team with efficiency. She can remove Jason's mask, wear Pamela's sweater, or serve as a decent distraction; whatever the team needs. The versatility that she brings to the team can be very useful, but her low Stamina/Speed combo can make her vulnerable if she's left alone. Try to stick with a team to fully use Fox's potential.
Fox can serve as a valuable team member to any group of players, which can make her a target. She can play aggressively, choosing to help kill Jason, or she can play passively by repairing objectives. If playing Fox, be sure to keep your wits about you as your versatility can make you a higher priority kill than other counselors.
Sheldon "Shelly" Finkelstein
Unlock Level: Level 0
Stats:
- Composure: 6/10
- Luck: 1/10
- Repair: 5/10
- Speed: 4/10
- Stamina: 4/10
- Stealth: 8/10
- Strength: 7/10
- Remove Jason's mask
- Repair objectives whenever possible
Shelly, our in-house prankster, serves as another opportunistic Fighter. Like Adam, he is best stationed near objectives with a sharp weapon in hand. His low Stamina/Speed combo doesn't do him any favors, so sticking close to others and the objectives puts him close to everything, allowing him to provide help at only an arm's length away. He is best used to repair objectives as opposed to fighting Jason, as his weapons practically disintegrate in his hands. With that being said, he can still use his Strength to deal some heavy damage when given the chance.
Shelly's only real notable stat is his Strength, so he should be helping other Technicians escape by trying to take Jason's mask off as he tries to kill the other counselors. Shelly can't play the endgame very well, as he lacks the Luck necessary to keep Jason at bay for long periods of time. When playing as Shelly, get out of camp before Jason can get the last laugh on you.
Beginner's Notes:
Shelly isn't a very beginner friendly character, as his Speed, Stamina, and Luck are low. Strength is his highest stat, which requires you to be knowledgeable of weapon stats and combat. Stealth is very weak in this game, and should not be encouraged in gameplay right now either. Shelly's Repair stat is average which can pose some problems for those still trying to get used to skill checks in this game as well.
Victoria Sterling
Unlock Level: Level 42
Stats:
- Composure: 4/10
- Luck: 8/10
- Repair: 3/10
- Speed: 4/10
- Stamina: 7/10
- Stealth: 7/10
- Strength: 2/10
- Defend other high value counselors
- Keep Jason distracted for as long as possible
- Bring parts to objectives whenever possible
With the arrival of Victoria, another Defender enters the bloody scene of Crystal Lake. She is essentially Chad's female counterpart. Where Chad excels in Speed, Victoria can keep up a chase with her high Stamina. She works well with pretty much any counselor due to her ability to protect people and her high Stealth helps to keep her noise pings from being too much of a problem.
A neglected Victoria can prove very dangerous for Jason. Due to her Repair, she can fix objectives without causing noise if she can focus, while also being a threat up close. Victoria is best used when she puts her catty attitude towards Jason, instead of the other counselors. A stun weapon in her hands, can keep Jason busy for a good amount of time. If he decides that he's had enough, and leaves her, she can cover for an absent Technician, provided enough concentration to keep her repairing quiet. This double threat can be a real ♥♥♥♥♥ for Jason to deal with.
Tommy Jarvis
- Composure: 10/10
- Luck: 10/10
- Repair: 10/10
- Speed: 10/10
- Stamina: 10/10
- Stealth: 10/10
- Strength: 10/10
- Assist the team in speeding up objective progress
- Save as many counselors as you can
- If necessary or possible, assist in killing Jason
Tips & Advice:
After two counselors, have either escaped, died, or left the match entirely, Tommy Jarvis will enter Crystal Lake to save the day. This will only occur if the CB radio has been activated. To find it, look for the cabin with the large red and white radio tower next to it.
As Tommy, all of your stats are maxed out. He also comes equipped with a shotgun, a pocket knife, and a can of med-spray. Although this makes him a real power player for the team, that doesn't make him invincible, use his stats to make sure objective progress continues to move or, is started back up again, while doing your best to protect other counselors from Jason.
When Tommy enters the scene, whatever scenario he encounters should determine what approach to take. If there are a lot of counselors left, try to help the escape by helping objectives get repaired faster. If there are few counselors left, try to assist them by helping them to kill Jason if there is at least a female amongst the group. If not, help them to survive the night at the very least.
At the end of the day, Tommy Jarvis is the hero of Crystal Lake, so he should be played like one. Selfishness helps no one, and lessens your chances of survival. Do you best to ensure Jason has a difficult time killing anyone. This can be hard, as Jason will be looking to get his revenge and Tommy is the highest value target for Jason.
Closing Notes
Thanks for taking the time to get this far into my guide! I hope the information in this guide provides some kind of help for anyone trying to learn a bit more about the game.
I'll be working on more guides in the future, but if you guys have any requests, throw them in the comments, and I'll do my best to supply by demand.
Keep safe out there at camp and remember: Escaping is a group effort! Help those who need it, and make sure progress is always being made.
