Solutions

1. X32 / X64 OS
To avoid unnecessary issues, run the game directly from your Steam library. Steam will offer different launch options — make sure to select x64 if it matches your system.
P.S. If you have a very old PC, there is a separate launch option below with DX9 rendering.

2. Antivirus
As always, the antivirus is the worst enemy.
I don’t have a universal solution, but adding the game executable (*.exe) to the antivirus exclusion list helped a lot. Every antivirus has a whitelist feature. It’s also a good idea to add anything related to the process, including Steam itself.

3. Read only
Check whether the “Read-only” checkbox is enabled for any folder in the save file path. Open the folder’s properties to verify this. Just in case, it’s better to force the setting by removing the checkmark and applying it to all subfolders.
If you reopen the properties afterward and the Read-only field appears as a filled square, don’t worry — that’s normal. At this point, you’ve done everything you can.
If you can’t change these settings for some reason, there are special cmd commands that can be used, but that’s a separate topic.

4. Check if your Documents folder is synced with OneDrive.
Foreword
This was the actual cause of the problem for me. Changing the Read-only attribute didn’t help, and since I never had issues with other applications, I didn’t expect the solution to be this simple.
Disabling Documents synchronization did fix the issue, but that’s not always a desirable option. Even though I use an English version of Windows 10, I didn’t realize that a folder once named in Cyrillic — Документи — could become a serious obstacle for developers at Crate.

Solution
- Rename the Documents folder in OneDrive to “Documents”, regardless of the language OneDrive originally used. This will not break the program’s logic.
- Alternatively, disable Documents synchronization — or uninstall OneDrive entirely if you don’t need it.

Have a good game! 🙂
