D6: The Most Powerful Spacebar Item?
Why is it so good? (and so frustrating...)
Hello and welcome to my interpretation of the best use for the D6. It is an item, much like the random system in the game, can make or break your run simply on drops. But with tactical use of the D6, a player can advance his/her chances with issac better than any other character
The D6 can be such annoying item because of its tendicy to make the player backtrack in the effort of getting more rolls for an item. What a normal depths level can take standard isaac, a D6 issac will take up to 2x to 3x longer. Exploring new rooms, then returning to the undesired item is what I like to call mining, and can aggrevate many a player.
A good isaac player will stay patient during his run and will plan ahead for maximum rolls, especially if they have the map or compass. They will also not be afraid to take mediocre items that may help them, rather than swinging for the fences. They will also accept defeat during a floor, and learn from their mistakes or continue their plan, if they know it will bring them victories in the long run.
When to roll
As a rule, almost all spacebar items on the depths and basement should be rolled. I have a certain few item that I do not roll at any time. For me, those are The candle, The nail, Yum heart (with habit), and Book of revelations. In the depths, I will often exchange my D6 for a less worthy spacebar item. There are some spacebar items that I will never trade for. (Poop, Crack the sky) If I end up not finding any good spacebar items, the chest can be a bounty for the D6 and can carry you through the chest.
When I have the D6 equipped and reaches the boss room first, I always fight the boss. I do this for two reasons. I may end up getting a item that is almost worthless to me (cat-o-nine tails or pagent boy if I already have enough money and Phd) and want to reroll. The second reason is that if I have not taken damage, I would like to see if I cannot turn a deal with the devil. I will then mine rolls if I do not like the item I get after the first roll. It is impossible ti get a spacebar item for a boss room.
If I reach the item room first, I take the item if it is a stat upgrade. To me, there is no use trying to reroll a speed up because the risk of getting stuck with future rolls of spacebar items. If I get a bomb bag, coin sack, or lil C.H.A.D and I have plenty or have little to no use of the items they give me, I reroll them. Dead cat is usually an automatic re roll unless I will become guppy. All other spacebar items will receive rerolls and items that have bad synergy will be rerolled. Some items that have good synergy will not be rerolled.Example I have mom’s knife and My little unicorn is in the item room.
Shops- Unless I have two of the three: wafer, habit, and health producing spacebar, I usually do not roll anything in the shop.
All spacebar items in the secret room get rolled because of the good chance of getting a game changing item. Make sure to have the D6 charged before looking for the secret room.
Compasses- When with a compass, it is generally a good idea to head for the item room if one has keys and to the boss room if one does not.
Non-rerollables and Angel and Devil rooms
These items cannot be rerolled from boss rooms-
Little C.H.A.D
Steven
Little Steve (Little Steve can be rolled to steven)
Little Gish
The Bible (can never be rerolled)
A great time to use a reroll is in a devil or angel room. Always look and see what is in those rooms before deciding to spend a roll. If one is low on health and scurred of fighting Krampus, it may be in the best interest to stay away from the room, but in my expience, fortune favors the bold. Krampus's lump of coal my be rerolled to another deal with the devil item if so desired. Also, when rerolling the devils offerings, it is possible to have items not cost as many heart containers as the normally would. Even without Judas tongue, I have found spirit of the night and brimstone for one heart and common cold for two. Anytime those items are available, the chances of success on that run go up drastically.
In Angel rooms, a roll is less likely to happen. There is always the possiblity of getting the bible, which in my opinion is trash. There many more passive items in the angel room than in the devil room and the player will find himself unable to pass up the mitre even if they have the chance to get sacred heart.
