How to setup your own helicopter music
Prerequisites
You'll need:
- Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain (obviously)
- The audio/music you want to use. It needs to be converted to an MP3-file.
- The location of the MGSV folder, usually here:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MGS_TPP
- Audacity[www.audacityteam.org], for converting and editing the audio file.
- Any YouTube downloader if you want to use audio from there.
The Setup
It's very easy, actually:
Note: You can use subfolders to keep everything in order.
- Move or copy your MP3-files into the CustomSoundtrack folder inside the MGSV installation folder.
- Their filenames will be their in-game titles. As far as I know, MGSV does not read any metadata from the file.
- There will be a file called Sands.mp3. It's up to you if you want to keep it or not.
Note: You can use subfolders to keep everything in order.
Finished!
Now, start the game:
You should see all of your custom music to conduct psychological warfare on The Red Army and XOF. Have fun!
- Open your iDroid
- Go to "Missions"
- Go to "Cassette Tapes"
- Navigate to "Music"
- Select "Musical Contents"
You should see all of your custom music to conduct psychological warfare on The Red Army and XOF. Have fun!
Known issues
99% of the time, it should just work without any issues. However, I did encounter these two situations, so I thought I'd note them here.
Pequod stops playing music
If you get more than about 400 or 500 meters apart from the LZ (to the point where you just can't hear it anymore) and the song has finished, the game will not restart playback when you get closer to Pequod. You might be able to get him to play by changing the helicopter music, but often you need to call in another heli.
MGSV runs bad after deleting a song
This one should be pretty care, but if you delete a song while playing the game, it does not get deleted from the music list immediately. If that song happens to be one that Pequod should've played, the game won't necessarily crash, but suddenly spike in CPU usage. This is I believe due to their error handling being "try until successful" - the game continously tries to read a file that does not exist until it can successfully read a file. Either just change your helicopter music or restart the game. This guide was created by its original author on the Steam Community. Are you the author and want it removed? Request removal.
