Introduction

This is - as the guide picture & short description shows - a quick quide for players new to grim dawn who have had previous experence with action role playing games before but want some help choosing a class and pointing out a powerful early skill to get started clearing & exploring.

Class basics

The five classes that can be chosen from at level two with the option to select a second class later:

The Demolitionist which favors fire & lightning damage
The Nightblade which favors dual wielding melee weapons.
The Soldier which favors the role of tank.
The Arcanist which favors direct magical damage.
The Occultist which favors damage over time magical damage.
The Shaman which is a hybrid favoring two handed weapons.

Obvious class roles

Each class has an obvious role:

The Demolitionist using fire enhanced melee or ranged damage.
The Nightblade using high DPS melee weapons to kill enemy's as quickly as possible.
The Soldier using a sword/axe/club or Pistol & shield then outlasting the enemy.
The Arcanist using high magical damage skills with an high mana cost.
The Occultist using damage over time spells to wear down enemys.
The Shaman using lightning enhanced damage backed up by summons.

Early damage

The speed up leveling & exploring you will want a decent skill as quickly as possible.

Demolitionist: Stun jacks but has a noticable cooldown and has unpredictable physics.
Nightblade: Phantasmal blades but has a noticable cooldown.
Soldier: Cadence but only affects a single target.
Arcanist: Panetti's Replicating Missle but has an unpredictable area of effect.
Occultist: Invest a single point in Dreeg's Evil Eye then master Blood Burst & Focused Gaze.
Shaman: Devouring Swarm which starts out weak but has piercing, area of effect & healing.

Misc notes

1) Skills tested on normal veteran difficulty with random drops up to killing the reanimator boss.

2) Dual weilding pistols requires an item not a skill - a skill from the inquisitor class (DLC) bypasses this (Tested by Commander Angerburgers, Thanks) - Its a passive skill that can be selected on the first level up based on the official grim dawn wiki.
