Burglar - 28 Days Later Build 42

New Build. Fresh Start.

I wanted to come into Build 42 blind and experience it all as a newcomer. Starting with nothing, building basic defences and fortifications. Planting crops and making rain collectors. Trying some of the Crafting/Survival Skills and building furniture & weapons to see what's new/changed.

There was no focus on any 1 particular Skill. Just experience as much as I could in 28 days.
I hope this information helps new players and people returning from B41.

Things To Look For

Weapons

Axe/Hatchet - you will need wood for basic fortifications and furniture.
Look for Whetstones to keep bladed weapons sharp.
I sharpened my Axe a couple of times and I cut down a lot of trees. Both are still rare to find.

Baseball Bats - They still do good damage and have new recipes.
Save them until you are at least Level 1-2 in Carpentry and make Nail and Can Bats.
At Level 4 craft Rake-Head & Sheet Metal Reinforced Baseball Bat.

Crowbar - after 400 kills my second bar was getting dull. Look for more or build better weapons. Find Maintenance Skill books as soon as you can.
By 500 kills I was Level 5 Long Blunt (Baseball Player) and could endure minor skirmishes without being fatigued.

Firearms - Shotguns and Handguns. Extra clips & boxes of ammo.
I didn't find any Aiming books and only the first Reloading one.
I got to Level 2 Reloading in a couple of hours after reading it and it was noticeably faster.

Tools & Materials

Duct Tape - Needed for Electrical, Tailoring, weapon assembly & repair.
The Burglar can use it to make Magazine Armor.

Garbage Bags - You can make improvised clothes with duct tape and a knife. Used to make Rain Collectors and has high capacity for loot, but poor weight reduction. 20 bags in a box.

Garden Fork/Hoe & Gardening Trowel - Used to till grass and dirt allowing seeds to be sown.
You can use your hands, but risk damaging them.

Hack Saw/Wood Saw - They both cut logs into planks. Also used to disassemble furniture. Need a Hack Saw to make a Sawed-off Shotgun. Keep one handy.

Hammer - Hammer is still #1 tool of all time. I used mine quite a bit and had to replace it after building fortifications and furniture. Still very durable and common.

Kitchenware - Frying Pan, Baking Pan/Tray to cook food. Salt, pepper, condiments & utensils.
Pots & Sauce Pans to collect and boil rain water. Gardening Spray Cans to make pesticides.

Meat Cleaver/Sharp Knife - Used for Butchering, Carving, Cooking and more.

Nails - I used close to a box building Rain Collectors, Storage Crates, furniture and weapons.

Pipe Wrench - Needed for plumbing Rain Collectors to sinks and washing machines. It is a solid back-up weapon to keep on your belt early, along with Hammer.

Reading Glasses - Wearing reading glasses reduces required reading time of literature such as skill books and magazines by 10%. This bonus works even if the player is not short sighted.

Scissors - Needed to obtain denim & leather strips and to modify a character's hair or beard.
Use with a Needle & Thread to start Tailoring and add extra defense to your clothes.

Screwdriver - Un-install radios and lights to level Mechanics early. Used to make weapons and disassemble furniture, and to add upgrades to firearms.
Needed to take apart Electronics, so you can Hotwire cars later if your not a Burglar.

Sheet - Hang over your windows, tear up to make rags, or craft Sling Bag and Sheet Rope.

Shovel/Spade - Fill sacks with dirt, sand and gravel. Dig graves to dispose of corpses.
Save them for later when Maintenance is higher to use as weapons.

Tarp - Use these instead of garbage bags to make Rain Collectors.
Make a Tarp Sling Bag until you find a backpack.
Also used to make a Tent Kit and Tarp Shelter, so Claustrophic people can sleep outside.

Most of these items were pretty easy to find. Keep any eye out for the Multitool and Handiknife. Chest Rigs, Holsters, Keyring bottle and can openers, and a Flask for some liquid courage.

Important Early Skill Books

Aiming I & II
The Aiming skill determines six key stats for firearms: accuracy, precision, range, firing angle, aiming time and recoil. Aiming experience is gained whenever the player successfully lands a shot on an enemy with a firearm. Use Alcohol/Beta Blockers before shooting to manage panic.
Try Army Surplus stores for Aiming & Reloading books.

Carpentry I & II
Level 1 to make Spiked Bat.
Level 2 to make Can-reinforced Bat.
Level 3 for Door, Crates & Rain Collectors.
Level 4 for Double Wide Gate & more Long Blunt weapons.
Look in garages/basement crates and McCoy Logging for more Carpentry books.

Carving I & II
At Carving 1, whittling a tree branch into a wooden rod, 4 small handles, and 4 wooden spoons will net you 60 XP per tree branch. At Carving 2+, further carving wooden spoons into x4 wooden forks will net you an additional 80 XP, totaling 140 XP from 1 tree branch.
Make Large Handles at Level 3 and craft Long Blunt weapons.

Cooking I & II
Each level of cooking skill increases the amount of nutrition each ingredient provides and reduces the amount of ingredient that is used. At level 7 the player is able to safely use small amounts of rotten food in their recipes. Most recipes unlock at Level 6 and can be learned by watching VHS.

Electrical I & II
To get Level 1 and Hotwire skill, if you're not a Burglar. Also need Level 3 to use generators.
This Skill always takes longer to level than most. Craft Makeshift radios for good XP.

Foraging I & II
Mushrooms, fish bait, medicinal plants, and wild plants are more likely to appear during rain, after rain, and at night. Check your headgear to see if it impairs your vision and hearing.
The Bushcrafter Trait & Wilderness Survival Magazine grant the ability to detect poison berries & mushrooms and allows the crafting of poultices from medicinal plants.
At Level 3 I found Cabbage, Potato and a lot of edible plants, enough to eat for the day.

Maintenance I & II
Reduces the chance for a melee weapon to lose condition on each hit.
Get more longevity from your Crowbar and Crafted Long Blunt weapons.

Mechanics I & II
Mechanics Level 2 also needed to Hotwire. At Level 4 you can repair engines.
Keep at least one vehicle in good shape, so it's quiet and reliable.

Reloading I & II
Reloading experience is gained by inserting rounds into a magazine, inserting a magazine into a firearm, or inserting rounds directly into any firearm. This means players can slowly but safely practice this skill by unloading and reloading magazines or firearms. Carry extra clips for combat.

Tailoring I & II
After reaching level one, one of the best ways to get XP is by crafting Rag Neck Guards, these give 2.5 XP and cost 6 rags and 2 units of thread.
Increasing XP reward based on complexity of item crafted. Repair clothes at Level 8.
Just like Carving, it's a long term investment but worth it. Good down time activities.

The Gated Community Rosewood

Get started by building basic Log Wall defences. No Carpentry skill needed.

Plant crops and build rain collectors. Leave pots/watering cans out in the rain. Make sure to purify it before drinking.

Use rain collectors in your backyard to water your crops and wash clothes. Build more over your sink/washing machine.

Plumb the rain collectors to the kitchen sink with a pipe wrench. Now you have water again, at least when it rains.

Connect a generator. There are a few new kinds. Have another ready for the gas pumps.

Log Wall on the other end of the street. You can use vehicles instead. I needed all the XP I could get.

Have a safe place to work on Mechanics.

Double Wide Gate (Carpentry Level 4). Look for Carpentry books in garages and basements. The book store had very little.

Can-Reinforced Bat was good. It only hit 2 at a time, but put down zeds quickly at Level 5 Long Blunt.

Early Long Blunt weapons. Spiked Bat has good damage. Can and metal weapons have better crit chance, but lower damage.

Some weapons require a lot of components and rare tools.

Build crates to store hoarded loot. You can stack and paint them. Color code them and stay organized.

Keep frequently used tools/materials on a surface or in a nearby container. They will auto-equip & put away after you're done.

Use Carving Skill on leftover wood after chopping down trees. Make Spears and Long Handles for more weapons.

Research recipes from some items. Some will be auto-learned after you gain higher levels in certain Skills.

Build more furniture and storage for Skills Books, Magazines and VHS.

Fill a small bottle with guzzoline when you find an empty vehicle. Enough to get to the Gas Station or home.

Went to Muldraugh to get VHS tapes and books. Some things were hard to find in Rosewood.

The Big Warehouse still has good stuff. I found a lot of seeds and building materials, not many weapons.

Value swing for 2 or more at a time, if you have multi-hit. Use Nimble to gather & drag, while chipping away slowly.

Basic Reloading. Found in Police Station locker. Was starting to use guns, now that base is secure.

Foraging was still fun and easy to level up. Don't forget to take off your helmet. I found a lot of critters.

There are a variety of new plants and seeds to find. You can grow your own cigarettes!

Know the planting seasons of your crops by finding Agriculture Magazines. Some of mine died. Call Dr. Greenthumb.

Agriculture, Animal Care, Blacksmithing & Carving look good, but will be long term investments.

Zed count after 28 days. Rosewood is pretty safe. Nearby Muldraugh and March Ridge had a lot more zeds.

Combat Skills after 28 days. I didn't go out of my way to kill zeds, unless they got in the way of looting.

Physical Skills after 28 days. I tried to be stealthy when I could. I also did a fair bit of running looking for cars.

Crafting Skills. I wanted to try more Skills, but couldn't find some books. Louisville has a better selection.

Weapon Loadout. Tire iron/flashlight combo. Knife for Carving & stealth kills. Hammer & screwdriver for doors & Skills.

Be Safe Best Burglar !

I got 7 days of water and 26 with power this time. Some settings have them off from the start.
Buildings are dark when the power is off. Carry a flashlight, don't go off into the darkness alone!

For a bigger base, try the 3 garage mansion in Louisville.

Check out Be The Best Burglar for more info.
