What are Traits and Occupations and How they Works?

Traits are the modifiers you pick in the character creator, plus a few you get for free from your occupation. Positive traits cost points, negative traits give points back, and you can’t spawn until your Points to Spend is zero or higher. So yeah, you’re always balancing power now vs pain later.

Occupations matter because skill starting levels are not just “nice”. In Build 42, any skill that starts above level 0 gets an XP boost: level 0 is 25%, exceptions apply (e.g., Running baseline isn’t 25%), and Strength/Fitness don’t use the XP-boost system), level 1 is 100%, level 2 is 133%, and level 3 or higher is 166%. That’s why a +3 or +4 starter is basically a fast lane, especially for the new crafting heavy skills.

And Build 42 is literally “Expanded Crafting and Balance”, so the crafting lane is way bigger than Build 41. The Indie Stone has been clear that B42’s crafting is about machines and methods like pottery, metal forging, stone working, brewing, and more, with machine tiers from primitive furnaces up to advanced electrical stuff you find on the map.

One more thing people miss. Some skills are easy to grind safely, others aren’t. Nimble is the classic example. You gain Nimble by walking while in combat stance (hold RMB or Left Ctrl), but you gain nothing if you’re “walking into a corner” because your character’s position is not changing. That tiny detail changes how you train it on day 1 in Rosewood or Riverside.

Traits and Occupations Tier List + builds

How I’m ranking

S = strong almost every run, saves your life or saves huge time
A = great, but depends on role or mode
B = solid value, not mandatory
C = niche, only if your plan matches it
D = usually not worth the points or actively risky

Also: some traits are occupation-only, so you can’t buy them directly

S Tier Positives

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Athletic (-10)
+4 Fitness, +20% run and sprint speed, and less endurance loss. In real runs, this is “I can kite a parking lot” energy, and it stacks nicely with melee styles that lean on spacing.
  • Strong (-10)
  • Stout (-6)
Strong is +4 Strength plus extra knockback power, Stout is +2 Strength. Knockback is not cosmetic, it’s how you keep a shove chain stable when you’ve got two zombies in front and one sliding in from the side.
  • Fast Learner (-6)
130% XP for basically everything except Strength and Fitness, which means your early “I need Maintenance 2, Carpentry 4, Nimble 3” plan happens faster. This is one of the few traits that still feels good even 200 hours into a server.
  • Keen Hearing (-6)
200% perception radius. This is the trait that saves you from the classic back-grab in a bathroom doorway, and it makes night looting feel less like gambling.
  • Dextrous (-2)
50% inventory transfer time. People underrate this because it doesn’t show up in a “damage” number, but it changes every single loot cycle, every single reload of your backpack at a trunk, every single “grab bandage now” moment.
  • Organized (-6)
130% container capacity, including cars. It’s not just hoarding, it’s fewer trips and fewer doorway fights. In MP, this also makes you the team mule without feeling slow.
  • Thick Skinned(-8)
It boosts your chance to avoid an injury from a zombie attack, and it even reduces clothing damage chance from walking through trees. If you play aggressive, this is one of the cleanest “less bad luck” buttons you can buy.
  • Handy (-8)
+1 Carpentry, +1 Maintenance, +1 Masonry, plus tougher constructions and faster build speed. If your plan includes barricades, stairs, furniture moves, or base rebuild after a helicopter event, you feel this trait constantly.

A Tier Positives

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Fit (-6)
+2 Fitness. It’s the “cheaper cousin” of Athletic and still does real work, especially for melee stamina and fence hopping routes.
  • Graceful (-4)
  • Inconspicuous(-4)
Graceful reduces footstep sound radius, Inconspicuous cuts spot chance. Together, they make stealth looting in tight towns like West Point feel less spiky.
  • Brave (-4)
Lower panic, and panic affects your combat consistency more than people want to admit. If you hate seeing your swing timing get weird, Brave is comfort that pays off.
  • Outdoorsy (-2)
  • Resilient (-4)
Outdoorsy lowers cold chance and reduces some tree scratch risk, Resilient slows zombification and reduces illness odds. These are “stay functional” traits, especially if you live in the woods or do long travel.
  • Wakeful (-2)
Less fatigue gain, better sleep efficiency. In SP this means more daylight hours before you’re forced to nap. In MP it means you’re the last person yawning during a night raid.
  • Gymnast (-5)
+1 Lightfooted and +1 Nimble. If you actually fight in combat stance a lot and you’re not just sprinting away, this is real power.

B Tier Positives

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Fast Reader (-2)
It’s not exciting, but reading speed matters when you’re stacking skill books early.
  • Low Thirst (-2)
  • Light Eater (-2)
These are quality of life, but they also make long looting loops smoother because you’re not forced into extra stops.
  • Iron Gut (-3)
Less food illness, shorter illness. It’s not mandatory, but it saves you from dumb mistakes when you’re living off weird food and imperfect storage.
  • Keen Cook (-3)
+2 Cooking and +1 Butchering, plus recipe knowledge. If you’re running Livestock Farmer or Chef style gameplay, this is a clean jumpstart.
  • First Aider (-4)
  • Former Scout (-6)
First Aider is +1 First Aid. Former Scout is +1 First Aid plus +1 Foraging. They’re better in MP where roles matter and injuries are frequent.

C Tier Positives

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Cat’s Eyes (-2)
  • Eagle Eyed (-4)
Night vision and wider view arc do help, but they’re not as universal as the stamina and hearing traits. Still great if you love night loot runs.
  • Speed Demon (-1)
Faster shifting and higher top speed, fun and useful, but it also tempts you into driving like you’re invincible. In MP, it can be worth it if your whole job is supply runs.
  • Inventive (-2)
Lower requirements for researching recipes from items. In Build 42 crafting-heavy play it has a place, but it’s not a combat saver.
  • Nutritionist(-4)
Seeing nutrition values is nice, especially if you’re managing weight traits on purpose, but most players can live without it.
  • Runner (-4)
  • Sewer (-4)
Sprinting and Tailoring starts are fine, but you usually pick these when you already know your run is focused on that lane.

D Tier Positives (mostly)

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Adrenaline Junkie(-4)
Speed boost only when you’re at strong or extreme panic. If you’re already panicking that hard, you’re in chaos, and that’s not where I like my build value.

  • Artisan(-2)
  • Mason(-2)
  • Whittler(-2)
  • WildernessKnowledge(-8)
  • Herbalist(-4)
  • Hiker(-6)
  • Hunter(-8)
  • Angler trait(-4)
These are not “bad”, they’re just plan-dependent. They shine if you’re doing a crafting or wilderness run on purpose, especially with Build 42’s expanded skill list like Glassmaking, Pottery, Knapping, Masonry, Carving.

Occupation-only Traits

Icon
Trait
Occupation
Effects & Description
Ax-pert
Lumberjack
Makes axes swing faster and reduces strain vibes in tree work.
Desensitized
Veteran
Locks panic to basically zero except nightmares.
Night Owl
Security Guard
Improves sleep efficiency.
Burglar
Burglar
Enables hotwiring and easier forced entry stuff

S Tier Negatives (good value if you play around them)

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • High Thirst (+1)
Water is manageable if you plan around bottles and sinks early. It’s annoying, not deadly.
  • Slow Reader (+2)
In SP it hurts, in MP it’s softer because you can read during downtime while friends loot. Still, it’s “pay with time” not “pay with blood”.
  • ShortSighted(+2)
It reduces view distance and foraging radius, but it can be negated with glasses or reading glasses. So it’s often free points after day 1 if you loot eyewear.
  • Smoker (+2)
Stress creeps up, cigarettes pull it down. If you’re the type who already loots every zombie corpse for lighters and smokes, it’s manageable.

A Tier Negatives (take only if your role fits)

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Conspicuous (+4)
If you’re not a stealth player, this can be okay. If you are, don’t touch it.
  • WeakStomach(+3)
You just have to be strict about food safety. Build 42 has more food systems coming and more crafting around preservation, so this can become less painful if you play clean.
  • Slow Healer (+3)
Injuries/illness recover slower (recent injuries are more severe). Okay if you play clean and avoid damage.
  • Hard of Hearing (+4)
Smaller perception + muffled/decreased hearing range. Manageable if you constantly visual-scan
  • Fast Metabolism (+2)
Tendency to lose weight; starts with Low Weight. Fine if you understand calories early.
  • Slow Metabolism (+2)
Tendency to gain weight; starts with High Weight. Good if you can control diet/rations.
  • Prone to Illness (+4)
Colds hit harder/more often and zombification progresses faster (125%). Better in warm/indoor, careful-play runs.

B Tier Negatives (points are not worth the everyday pain)

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • All Thumbs (+2)
400% transfer time is brutal. It ruins fights and looting both.
  • Clumsy (+2)
Louder movement. It makes every mistake louder.
  • Hearty Appetite (+4)
150% hunger is a constant tax.

  • Restless Sleeper (+6)
  • Sleepyhead (+4)
Sleep becomes a job, and that gets old fast.
  • Cowardly (+2)
200% panic (except phobias/night terrors). Small points, but panic is constant friction.
  • Sunday Driver (+1)
40% slower acceleration and hard-capped to 30 km/h, can get you killed during vehicle escapes for basically no points.

C Tier Negatives (not worth it, but niche/roleplay picks)

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Agoraphobic (+4)
Panic outdoors and reduced foraging search radius. Outdoors is… most of the game.
  • Claustrophobic (+4)
Panic indoors. Sucks for looting/base life; room-size matters.
  • Fear of Blood (+5)
Panic doing first aid on self, stress when bloody, can’t do first aid on others. manageable, but chores forever.
  • Disorganized (+6)
70% capacity in all containers (even cupboards). Constant inventory pain.
  • Slow Learner (+6)
70% XP in most skills (except Strength/Fitness). Not instantly lethal, but a long-run tax.
  • Out of Shape (+6)
-2 Fitness and worse endurance/regen; you’ll feel it early until you train it off.

D Tier Negatives (usually run-killers)

Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Short of Breath (+5)
Big endurance penalties (running/sprinting +40% loss; swings +30% loss). Brutal in real fights.
  • Thin-skinned (+8)
It reduces your “no injury” chance multiplier, and it makes tree travel chew your clothing. That’s not a cute downside, that’s a death spiral in a bad hallway
  • Illiterate (+8)
No skill books, no recipe magazines, no XP multipliers from reading. It locks you out of a huge part of progression.
  • Deaf (+12)
You lose sound. In Project Zomboid, that’s losing half your warning system.
  • Unfit (+10)
  • Puny (+10)
  • Weak (+6)
  • ReluctantFighter(+4)
These directly wreck endurance, carry, knockback, and XP for combat skills. You feel it every fight, forever.

“Negative traits” that aren’t picked for points (weight-based)
These show up as negative traits, but are tied to your character’s weight ranges (and can be removed by gaining/losing weight).

Underweight Spectrum
Overweight Spectrum
  • Low Weight
  • Very Low Weight
  • Emaciated
  • High Weight
  • Very High Weight

Removed or Inactive Traits (don’t plan builds around them)
Icon
Traits & Points
Effects & Description
  • Lucky
  • Unlucky
  • Patient
  • Short Tempered
  • Light Drinker
  • Hardened Drinker
  • Hypochondriac
  • Brooding
  • Marksman
These are listed as removed or inactive on the wiki, so treat them as legacy noise for Build 42 planning.

Occupation Tier List (Build 42) + builds for solo and multiplayer

Quick reminder: skill starters are XP multipliers. +3 or +4 in a skill is 166% XP, and that matters more in Build 42 because there are more skills that can define your whole run, like Blacksmithing, Tailoring, Pottery, Glassmaking, Masonry, Knapping.

Lumberjack (0)
  • +2 Axe
  • +1Maintenance

Carpenter (+1)
  • +3 Carpentry

  • Carpenter
  • Construction Worker
  • Positives: Handy, Organized, Fast Learner, Dextrous, Wakeful
